Introduction to the black side.............

For a while I have been concerned that the black side of life and design here in the city of boston gets overlooked. In a city that is 51% minority with a Black Governor, why do we have to work so hard to know about all the exciting things that are happening in the city? Therefore the goal of this blog is to pass along information about events, activities, job opportunities and restaurant reviews from a minority perspective. The Black side or hidden side of life and design here in Boston is the scope of what you will find in the posts. And some occasional commentary will also make its way to the web. Enjoy!

Subject: CDRC-Boston: Volunteer Design Services Needed ASAP!

Volunteer Design Services Needed ASAP!

The following project requires a very quick turnaround; drawing concept and description services are needed for a June 9 community meeting.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION

CLIENT: Haley House Bakery Café is looking to acquire a new lot of land to accommodate and expand the variety of services it provides the Dudley Square community and beyond. The client is visioning a new green building (they'd like to be the first platinum café in Boston) facing Washington Street in Dudley Square (across from its current Dade Street location) to house a cafe and 'scoop shop' with outdoor seating on the street level, middle income housing community programming on the upper levels, and a green roof garden to supplement the fresh produce used in the cooking program and café fare. The building would also include living space for a volunteer community, using a bio fueled delivery vehicle, supply storage, and a loading dock.

PROJECT NEED: To produce a one page 8.5 x 11 program handout of a drawing that captures the concept, and a written description on the reverse side, for the client to hand out at community meetings, and to present to city agencies and community organizations in hopes of mobilizing support and acquiring the land for this building project.

DESIGN EXPERTISE NEEDED: The design team should have strong urban design experience (familiarity with Dudley Square is a plus but not required), LEED certified/strong knowledge of green building concepts, strong and convincing writing skills, ability to create concept ual presentation renderings/illustrations, and good verbal communication skills.

Please submit your interest along with your individual, team, or organization's profile to info@cdrc-boston.org.

Fwd: 3rd DiR Convivial Symposium

SPURSE
3RD DiR Convivial Symposium: SPURSE
SPURSE: NEGOTIATING: 7 PM Wednesday May 20th, 2009 The Art Institute of Boston @ Lesley University / Room 215 / 700 Beacon Street, Boston, MA / Join us at 6.30 for Hors D' Oeuvres / Presentation at 7pm Directions - http://www.lesley.edu/aib/studentlife/directions.html SPURSE is an open-ended group of individuals and organizations that work together as an experimental consultation service towards the development of new forms of enaction, situated knowledge and modes of being of the world (for more information please see: spurse.org). http://www.spurse.org/spurse/openings.html
After every poor excuse for inaction has been exhausted. And when every rationalization of an empire of new clothes has run aground. We are still left beached sinking within a language of inexhaustible apriori mediocrity. Anger and violence is demanded. Action is asked. A scapegoat will not appear. We ask you to sharpen the knives and needles and soften the leathers. Join Spurse, a nd the full Board of Berwick, for a weaving of nets and a fitting of shoes. Spurse will be in residence at the Berwick Research Institute over two days (May 19-20). The first evening will be devoted to a retreat and workshop for the Berwick community. The second evening will involve the presentation of a series of polemical re-framings of culture, research, community, and the possibility of art.
Part One May 19th 6pm: The Berwick Composition. Spurse will begin a presenting of the possible spaces of constituting to the full Board and staff of the Berwick Research Institute for discussion, revision and situational approval. 6PM AIB @ Lesley University / Room 215 / 700 Beacon Street. Part Two Public Presentation May 20th 6.30 PM: Constituting the Individuations without Commons: Guy Debord sent packing. Whitehead evoked. Relationality rescued. Deleuze reporting from the IDF. Languages tabled. Wonderment and affect presented without categories. Ecologies confront Umwelts. Intractions co-emerging. Abstraction lived as bodies of many scales. And a soccer match staged. Join Spurse for an evening of re-examining tools and the making of apparatuses.
As a kick-off to20his tenure as DiR, Leon Johnson has initiated a series of symposia through which the Berwick will draw together leading creative thinkers to provide state-of-the-art research on questions relating to the cultivation of, and engagement with, new audiences; the incubation, initiation, and distribution of new works in convergent media; and strategies to build and sustain networks of knowledge and collaboration. The results of these symposia will form the nucleus of a Berwick-authored publication slated for release in 2010. *Leon Johnson + Kevin Dacey Contact: leon@berwickinstitute.org / http://www.leonjohnson.org / kevin@berwickinstitute.org
