Introduction to the black side.............

For a while I have been concerned that the black side of life and design here in the city of boston gets overlooked. In a city that is 51% minority with a Black Governor, why do we have to work so hard to know about all the exciting things that are happening in the city? Therefore the goal of this blog is to pass along information about events, activities, job opportunities and restaurant reviews from a minority perspective. The Black side or hidden side of life and design here in Boston is the scope of what you will find in the posts. And some occasional commentary will also make its way to the web. Enjoy!

Subject: NINE DAYS TILL Artists For Humanity's Greatest Party on Earth

 Hello there!

If you haven't purchased your tickets, for this year's Greatest Party on Earth, now is the time. Check out our updated event web site.

Not convinced?

Let your imagination taste the out-of-this-world delectables being prepared by a veritable who's who of Boston's booming culinary scene.

Then consider the art at the Greatest Party on Earth! Works created by youth from each of Artists For Humanity's studios are for sale with up to 50% going to the teen artist: featuring large scale paintings of endangered trees from around the globe and a multi-media exhibit of "Change Makers" from Gandhi to Goodall. And, of course, our fantastic collection of photographs, t-shirts, and hand-painted totes. And wait till you see the "global seating" a collaboration of Merida and our Sculpture studio.

And then there is the non-stop "over the moon" entertainment. Booty Vortex, Emperor Norton's Stationary Marching Band, and back by POPULAR DEMAND Ten31 Productions and Samba Tremeterra! The EpiCenter will be the place to be on April 18th.

Tickets are selling quickly. Our supporters at the Boston Globe, Boston Magazine, and TV-38 have been getting the word out. Lead sponsors Sun Life Financial and Robert Beal are bringing a strong contingent to celebrate our youth, their art, and our planet. We just need you!

Men,

SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY HAS 10 FULL RIDES FOR AFRICAN AMERICAN MEN AND WOMEN
Syracuse University has 10 Full Rides for African American Men and Women Interested in Studying Architecture.  Mark Robbins, Dean of Syracuse University's School of Architecture is desperately seeking young men and women  of color interested in pursuing a five year professional degree in  Architecture. He says he's deeply committed to bringing diversity to his field  and has scholarship money set aside to fully cover education costs for 10  students. He says that Hispanic enrollment in the school has increased  substantially, but it's been harder to attract African Americans. Syracuse University 's School of Architecture has a great reputation and this seems like a terrific opportunity, so please pass this on to everyone you know.

Much Thanks to Bill Pankey for making us aware of this opportunity.

BAC Summer Academy
Design exploration for high school students at the Boston Architectural College

Dear Community Leader / Educator,

Offered since 1973, BAC Summer Academy is a design exploration program for high school students entering grades 10 or higher. Your students will benefit from learning about the design field from design professionals and educators at the Boston Architectural College. Please pass this information on to your colleagues and students whom you think will be interested in this valuable career exploration program.

BAC Summer Academy emphasizes Basic Design Fundamentals, Visual Communication, Verbal Communication, and Professional Standards. Its curriculum is aligned to the MA Curriculum Frameworks for Arts and allows students to make connections with the world of design and other disciplines.

During BAC Summer Academy, students experience the field of design through creative hands-on projects, interactive learning, and educational field trips throughout Boston and to professional design firms. Challenged to think critically and communicate their design ideas to others, students contribute to discussions and begin to understand the impact of design around them. Through individual and collaborative projects, students experience the design process, assessing and revising design proposals. Upon completion of the program, students have new work to include in their portfolio for college application, and a stronger sense of whether to pursue a design career.

BAC Summer Academy 2009 will take place from July 6th - 31st (M-F, 9:00am - 12:30pm). Enrollment is first-come, first-served and tuition includes materials for the program. Multiple scholarships are available based on financial need as well as through the Houseman/Kirkham Fund established to promote diversity in the design professions. The scholarship deadline is Friday, May 1st.

For program information and application details, please visit www.the-bac.edu/summer or contact us at 617.585.0101 / summer@the-bac.edu
