Introduction to the black side.............

For a while I have been concerned that the black side of life and design here in the city of boston gets overlooked. In a city that is 51% minority with a Black Governor, why do we have to work so hard to know about all the exciting things that are happening in the city? Therefore the goal of this blog is to pass along information about events, activities, job opportunities and restaurant reviews from a minority perspective. The Black side or hidden side of life and design here in Boston is the scope of what you will find in the posts. And some occasional commentary will also make its way to the web. Enjoy!

                       Sub/Urban Justice Summer '09

Do you know any motivated teens that are looking to transform their
schools and communities in just ways?  Sub/Urban Justice Summer (SJS) is
currently accepting applications for this year's six-week summer program:

Running From July 6th to August 13th

SJS brings together a diverse group of students from Newton, Brookline,
Boston, Needham and Cambridge to learn about social justice issues
(examples include race, class, the environment, housing, education,
sexism, immigration, and transportation), connect with existing social
justice groups, and create community-based organizing projects*.

Participants will learn about the world by engaging in interactive games,
workshops, group discussions, field trips and community tours. They will
meet and work with local experts in the fields of housing, environmental
and transportation justice. They will collaborate and network with Boston
youth groups. And by the end of the summer, they will have developed a
community action plan to work on an issue that matters to them.
Motivated students may apply for our year-round employment program to
complete their projects during the school year.

If you know a young person (or are one yourself!) interested in applying
to SJS, please visit www.bostonmobilization.org/subjust.html to download
a brochure and application. Or call Director Christopher Messinger @
 (617) 276-5873 with any questions.

Final Applications are due May 25th!

*An example of a community project from last year is Speak Up!  Students
from four different private schools determined that racism in their
schools was seriously impacting all students, but was rarely discussed.
In response, they began gathering stories from their peers, to be
compiled into a book and partnered with a curriculum guide. The Speak Up!
Anthology is due to be published this spring - contact Christopher
(617-492-5599) or email speakupstories@gmail.com for more information or
 to schedule a workshop...
