Introduction to the black side.............

For a while I have been concerned that the black side of life and design here in the city of boston gets overlooked. In a city that is 51% minority with a Black Governor, why do we have to work so hard to know about all the exciting things that are happening in the city? Therefore the goal of this blog is to pass along information about events, activities, job opportunities and restaurant reviews from a minority perspective. The Black side or hidden side of life and design here in Boston is the scope of what you will find in the posts. And some occasional commentary will also make its way to the web. Enjoy!

Subject: BAC Summer Academy scholarship opportunities for diverse High School students

This is a great summer program and scholarship opportunity for any young people in grades 10, 11, & 12 who may have an interest in Architecture or design.  The diversity scholarship recipients are then eligible to apply for a diversity scholarship to our degree program.  Please share this info and let me know if you have any young people who are interested.  Links to the scholarships and applications are below.

BAC Summer Academy
Design exploration for high school students at the Boston Architectural College

Dear Community Leader / Educator,

Offered since 1973, BAC Summer Academy is a design exploration program for high school students entering grades 10 or higher. Your students will benefit from learning about the design field from design professionals and educators at the Boston Architectural College. Please pass this information on to your colleagues and students whom you think will be interested in this valuable career exploration program.

BAC Summer Academy emphasizes Basic Design Fundamentals, Visual Communication, Verbal Communication, and Professional Standards. Its curriculum is aligned to the MA Curriculum Frameworks for Arts and allows students to make connections with the world of design and other disciplines.

During BAC Summer Academy, students experience the field of design through creative hands-on projects, interactive learning, and educational field trips throughout Boston and to professional design firms. Challenged to think critically and communicate their design ideas to others, students contribute to discussions and begin to understand the impact of design around them. Through individual and collaborative projects, students experience the design process, assessing and revising design proposals. Upon completion of the program, students have new work to include in their portfolio for college application, and a stronger sense of whether to pursue a design career.

BAC Summer Academy 2009 will take place from July 6th - 31st (M-F, 9:00am - 12:30pm). Enrollment is first-come, first-served and tuition includes materials for the program. Multiple scholarships are available based on financial need as well as through the Houseman/Kirkham Fund established to promote diversity in the design professions. The scholarship deadline is Friday, May 1st.
