Introduction to the black side.............

For a while I have been concerned that the black side of life and design here in the city of boston gets overlooked. In a city that is 51% minority with a Black Governor, why do we have to work so hard to know about all the exciting things that are happening in the city? Therefore the goal of this blog is to pass along information about events, activities, job opportunities and restaurant reviews from a minority perspective. The Black side or hidden side of life and design here in Boston is the scope of what you will find in the posts. And some occasional commentary will also make its way to the web. Enjoy!

We're back!!!

The directors at the Somerville Museum have invited us back to present new and exciting works by New England mosaic artists this fall. Building on the success of the 2007 exhibition, we are committed to make this year's show even better. The Art of Mosaic 2009 will run from Thursday, September 10 – Saturday, October 31, 2009.

I'm writing for two reasons:

1. Call for Art

ImageSubmissions are now being accepted. The deadline is May 31, 2009. You must live within the six New England states (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont) and can submit photos of three mosaics for consideration. There is a $35 application fee which will be used to cover the expenses and publicity for the exhibition.

As with the 2007 exhibition, we plan to involve the mosaic community as well as the general public as much as possible. In addition to the great mosaic art, the exhibition will also include demonstrations, lectures, docent tours, films, and more – all free and open to the public

We are also talking to some internationally recognized mosaic artists about coming to teach some weekend workshops and share their expertise with us. More on this as it develops…

The prospectus and submission form are online at:

2. Mosaics New England website

ImageTo help us promote the exhibition and spread the word about the great work that we all do, I have launched a website which I hope will help bring us New England mosaic artists closer together as a community.

This website will develop over time. For now, it includes information about the 2009 and 2007 exhibitions. It also includes directories where the public can find out about mosaic artists and educators in their community.

Any New England mosaic artist or educator can be included in these directories. You do not have to participate in the exhibition to be listed.

ARTISTS: The Artist page will list artist contact information arranged by state. If you want to be included, send me:

• Your name
• Your business name (if you have one)
• Your location (city & state)
• Contact information (this can include your address , phone, email address, and/or website link)

EDUCATORS: If you teach mosaic classes or workshops and want to be listed on this page, send me:
• Your Name
• Your business name (if you have one)
• Your location (city & state)
• Contact information (this can include your address , phone, email address, and/or website link)
• A short statement (3 lines maximum) about the classes/workshops you teach

We had a lot of requests from people at the last exhibition for the names of artists in their area – or for the location of mosaic workshops. This will be a great resource to point people to during this next exhibition and to help promote mosaics art in New England. Just email your information to me and I will post it on the site.

Check out the site:

Let's keep in touch. I will send you more information about the exhibition and the website as things develop.

Rock On!
-Bill Buckingham
