Introduction to the black side.............

For a while I have been concerned that the black side of life and design here in the city of boston gets overlooked. In a city that is 51% minority with a Black Governor, why do we have to work so hard to know about all the exciting things that are happening in the city? Therefore the goal of this blog is to pass along information about events, activities, job opportunities and restaurant reviews from a minority perspective. The Black side or hidden side of life and design here in Boston is the scope of what you will find in the posts. And some occasional commentary will also make its way to the web. Enjoy!

BARR FOUNDATION POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT SENIOR PROGRAM OFFICER FOR THE
ENVIRONMENT

The Barr Foundation (Barr), a Boston-based family foundation, seeks a
Senior Program Officer for its Environment program. Barr's mission is to
enhance the quality of life for all of Boston's residents. Its work focuses
on three critical challenges to Boston: providing quality education, making
a more livable city, and enhancing cultural vitality. Since its creation in
1987, Barr (http://www.barrfoundation.org) has served as a low-profile but
increasingly influential foundation in Greater Boston. While most of its
work is anonymous and grant proposals are accepted by invitation only, Barr
has a growing local and national reputation for being strategic in its
grant making and for serving as a model learning organization.
Barr's vision is "of a city with deep connections to nature and community,
rich cultural expression, and hopeful futures for children. To achieve this
vision, the Foundation focuses on partnerships with and among others that
advance a vital, just, and caring community." Barr has articulated five
basic approaches to this work: 1) understanding and working within systems;
2) listening to and supporting Greater Boston's diverse voices; 3)
strengthening connections within and among networks; 4) practicing
knowledge management and encouraging continuous learning; and 5)
appreciating and nurturing community-based leadership.
In the environmental strategic area, Barr has focused on increasing the
quality and quantity of open space and water resources, developing
environmental stewardship, supporting environmental justice, as well as
facilitating smart, equitable regional development (including green design
and energy efficiency).
Responsibilities

Maintain a breadth of knowledge about current trends, emerging issues,
policy interventions, and innovations in the program's areas of interest.

Review, assess and proactively cultivate grant making opportunities.

Recommend grants for funding by soliciting peer reviews and providing

reporting to staff, trustees, and external colleagues on performance.
Conduct site visits of pending and active projects.

Work closely and facilitate collaboration with other program staff at the
Foundation.

Participate in and provide leadership to the Foundation's own initiatives
and to collaborative efforts involving other funders and community groups
to address issues of importance to the Foundation.

Plan and implement learning and networking opportunities for grantees,
foundation colleagues, private, and public sector partners.

Help maintain and grow networks that inform and increase the effectiveness
of Foundation's work.

Manage external consultants for grant-related projects.

Contribute to the development of field knowledge and best practices.

Represent the Foundation in the community

Strong record of achievement and relevant experience, with a minimum of
eight years in the nonprofit, public, or private sector in one or more of
the fields related to the Foundation's Environment Program.

Minimum of four years in a senior level management role within an
organization.

A demonstrated commitment to, and deep experience working for social,

Must thrive when working under deadlines, have strong project, time, and
budget management skills, and be able to handle multiple tasks
simultaneously without sacrificing attention to detail.

Knowledge of the culture, neighborhoods, institutions, and leadership of
