Introduction to the black side.............

For a while I have been concerned that the black side of life and design here in the city of boston gets overlooked. In a city that is 51% minority with a Black Governor, why do we have to work so hard to know about all the exciting things that are happening in the city? Therefore the goal of this blog is to pass along information about events, activities, job opportunities and restaurant reviews from a minority perspective. The Black side or hidden side of life and design here in Boston is the scope of what you will find in the posts. And some occasional commentary will also make its way to the web. Enjoy!

Bird's Nest--Herzog & De Meuron in China

Wed. Sept. 17 12:15 pm
Sun. Sept. 21 12:15 pm
Bird's Nest--Herzog & De Meuron in China by Christoph Schaub and Michael Schindhelm (Germany, 2008, 88 min.). Schaub and Schindelm's documentary follows two Swiss star architects on two very different projects: the national stadium for this sunmer's Olympic games in Peking and a city area in the provincial town of Jinhua, China. A rchitects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron are literally building bridges between two cultures, two architectural traditions, and two political systems. Their work doesn't simply enhance China's great international debut, but serves the everyday needs of the Chinese population. Bird's Nest presents the Basel architects as they find solutions not in the comfort of an ivory tower but in encounters and friction on the ground.
View the trailer and enjoy the documentary!
On behalf of the swissnex Team,
Emil

Greenbuild 2008
  • 9/19, 2-3:30pm: BL06 - Why Diversity Matters: Sustainability Depends on Inclusion and a Commitment to Design for All - There are different forms of diversity: gender, ethnic, physical, economic, and biological. We know that diversity builds strength, but how does this happen and why? Studies about innovation and collaboration show that those pursuits are enriched by diverse perspectives. Learning from one another is important and may be especially critical in the realm of sustainability, where we need to innovate and adapt behavior in significant ways.
Build Boston 2008
  • 9/19, 4-5:30pmB71 Building communities through the green economy - Green jobs and businesses provide workforce development and entrepreneurship opportunities for communities that receive fewer of the economic benefits and more of the environmental consequences of traditional development. This workshop highlights how business owners, developers, contractors, and community members can participate in and benefit from a just green economy.
  • 9/20, 1-2:30pmC48 Pro-bono in practice: doing good work that works for your firm - Now more than ever, architects are reaching out individually and in teams to assist with disaster relief, help underserved community groups, and provide services to non-profit organizations in need of professional expertise.  Boston-area firms both large and small have successfully made pro bono service a part of their businesses. Our panelists share their pro-bono design work and detail the strategies that make pro-bono services work for their firms.

February 1968 saw 1,300 African American Sanitation workers strike to demand their basic rights to organize a union, to gain a living wag e, and to garner the respect and dignity deserving of all working men and women. The Civil Rights Leader, Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., eventually came to Memphis to support the strikers and was subsequently assassinated. From those dramatic events, one phrase emerged that continues to inspire community activists forty years later, "I AM A MAN."

With this theme, twelve artists have been selected to create new work that immortalizes the 1968 workers strike as well as offer interpretations of what it means to be an African American Man in America in 2008.  The goal of the exhibition is to also draw greater attention to the role and responsibility of the artist to serve as an agent of change. Ernest Withers, who not only photographed and captured the historic I AM A MAN march also created the bold signs that expressed the intellect and drive of African American males in America to reclaim their manhood and their right to be respected and treated as equals in America and all over the world.

This thought provoking exhibition comes at a time when the perception of a Black man in America is most under introspection ranging from Barack Obama securing the Democratic nomination to the controversial not-guilty verdict in the Sean Bell trial. We hope that you will share the experience of this exhibition with a child.
