Introduction to the black side.............

For a while I have been concerned that the black side of life and design here in the city of boston gets overlooked. In a city that is 51% minority with a Black Governor, why do we have to work so hard to know about all the exciting things that are happening in the city? Therefore the goal of this blog is to pass along information about events, activities, job opportunities and restaurant reviews from a minority perspective. The Black side or hidden side of life and design here in Boston is the scope of what you will find in the posts. And some occasional commentary will also make its way to the web. Enjoy!

Swiss Solar Car Makes Historical Round-the-World Trip…
...and Stops at Tufts and MIT
on September 15, 2008

Dear Jay Lee,
=2 0
The Solar Taxi is about to become the first car ever to drive around the world fueled by the power of the sun. "I haven't spent a penny on gasoline," says driver and Swiss schoolteacher Louis Palmer of his round-the-world trip. The car was built with the input of four Swiss universities.
Louis Palmer left Switzerland on July 3, 2007. By the time he returns to Switzerland in November 2008, Mr. Palmer will have driven through five continents, more than 40 countries, and over 33,000 miles - and will have shared the two-seater cabin with ministers, journalists, backpackers, law makers, Hollywood celebrities, and a Jordanian prince
Please join us us for a talk by and a discussion with Louis Palmer, Initiator+Driver of the Solar Taxi

Open Studios Launches 10-Year Milestone of Art in Roxbury

(Roxbury, MA) - The 10th Annual Roxbury Open Studios will take place October 4 & 5 from 11am to 6pm.  With "ART ROX" as the theme, this anniversary year will include new works by Mass College of Art & Design's Black Student Union, five additional studios, and the Haley House will launch a special exhibit featuring Roxbury painters.

Sidewalk Sam will also bring a special installation to the streets of Roxbury with his noteworthy series of sidewalk paintings called "Doves of Peace." This interactive project will collaborate with the Boston Police Department, youth, and the community to replace the many makeshift memorials throughout Roxbury with white doves.

Roxbury is home to artists such as Allan Crite, Lou Jones, Paul Goodnight, and countless others.  Roxbury Open Studios aims to help artists leverage themselves economically and professionally. It is an excellent opportunity to network, support art as a whole, and buy art that is both original and authentic.  This event is free and open to the public.  Over 150 artists will participate this year and will share a broad range of works from painting, sculpting, home décor, photography, quilt making, jewelry making, clothing, mix media, and more.

A foldout map/brochure of open studios and exhibit locations throughout Roxbury will be available September 23.  The map will include a complete list of artists, sites, and bike trails.  Shuttle service from one location to the next will be provided as needed.

Discover Roxbury will lead a guided walking tour.  For more information about the tour, contact Marcia Butman at (617) 427-1006 or email info@DiscoverRoxbury.org.

For complete list of site locations, email Terri Brown at tbrown@madison-park.org.

Roxbury Open Studios is produced by ACT Roxbury, a cultural economic program of Madison Park Development Corporation.
