Introduction to the black side.............

For a while I have been concerned that the black side of life and design here in the city of boston gets overlooked. In a city that is 51% minority with a Black Governor, why do we have to work so hard to know about all the exciting things that are happening in the city? Therefore the goal of this blog is to pass along information about events, activities, job opportunities and restaurant reviews from a minority perspective. The Black side or hidden side of life and design here in Boston is the scope of what you will find in the posts. And some occasional commentary will also make its way to the web. Enjoy!

Subject: Kara Walker Exhibit

Alright, I promise to stop filling your inbox with a bunch of stuff, but I gotta pass this on for any and all who might be interested and anyone remotely close to the New York Area. I don't want to annoy you guys with a constant flood, but really... I can't help it that I am fortunate enough to know such brilliant, attractive, and urbane people (wink). Click on the link below. Take it easy.

Ruth Fremson/The New York Times
"Kara Walker: My Complement, My Enemy, My Oppressor, My Love" is "an exquisite, implacable, loose-cannon retrospective," Holland Cotter writes. "Brilliant is the word for it, and the brilliance grows over the survey's decade-plus span." The African-American artist, whose hand-crafted, 19th-century style silhouette mural made her an art star at 25, creates panoramas, drawings, collages, text pieces and shadow puppet film animations, "about race first and last." Cotter writes: "The consistency of the imagery — hapless 'masters,' uppity 'slaves,' tragic-comic violence, uncensored sex — is one reason the show feels so concentrated and absorbing. Once you're in it, you're really in it. You can't just stroll through. Also, Ms. Walker's style is magnetic." If she retired today, he says, "she would leave behind one of the most trenchant and stirring bodies of art produced by any American in the past 15 years." Don't wait: see it at the Whitney this weekend.

"Don't be mad at me! I was born with these powers, I didn't ask for them."

Thursday Oct. 18 Don't miss it !

Manuel Sanchez-Ruiz, Principal at Sasaki Associates - will present:
Caohai North Urban Shore, Kunming, China

Known as China's "eternal spring city," Kunming has a temperate climate year
round, picturesque scenery, and a population of 4.5 million people. As it
emerges as a gateway to western China and countries to the south such as
Thailand and Vietnam, Kunming is poised for major growth. As part of three
major projects in the city, Sasaki undertook the urban design for this
comprehensive high-end residential, cultural, and entertainment development
on the north shore of the city's nearby Dianchi Lake.

Sasaki and client Shui On applied sustainable principles to the planning and
design of the complex project on 485 hectares. The plan integrates native
vegetation and open space with an environmentally responsive transportation
infrastructure connected to the city and region's existing roadways. It
dedicates about 87 hectares of the total site to a mix of high, medium, and
low-density housing and about 29 hectares to cultural facilities such as
museums, theaters, an amphitheater, and an artists' community. It also
envisions a "retail village" featuring a pedestrian street with narrow
canals and small alleys lined with shops. Other uses include an office park,
a research and development campus, hotels, recreational areas, and a golf
        course.

One of the key elements of the plan is to thoroughly restore Dianchi Lake,
which has been severely polluted. The plan calls for a short-term strategy
of creating a lake "cell" isolated from the rest of the lake and filling it
with clean water. Once the lake has reached a level of recreational
cleanliness, the lake cell and the lake will be combined. This ecological
regeneration is aimed, ideally, to parallel the urban rebirth
caused by the
Caohai North Shore urban planning initiative.

Manuel Sanchez-Ruiz is an Urban Designer with over twenty years of
experience in large land-planning and urban master planning projects, both
domestically and internationally. His expertise in design includes new
communities, mixed-use districts, campus plans, and waterfronts. Manuel
previously worked in architectural and urban planning capacities in his
native Colombia and in Mexico, and with another Boston firm.  He joined
Sasaki in 1996.

Manuel's practice has included a visionary framework for the urban center of
Foshan, a historic city in China's Pearl River valley; a canal district in
Puerto Rico; the Stamford, CT waterfront; Caohai North Shore in Kunming
China, where he is overseeing the transformation of one of the world's most
polluted lakes into a vibrant, mixed-use urban neighborhood; and Thu Thiem,
a 700-hectare peninsula located just across from Ho Chi Minh City's central
business quarter. He also master planned Southwood, near Tallahassee,
Florida, a major new community that combines proximity to university and
research facilities with a celebration of Florida vernacular architecture.

"Come join in on Harvard's Second Pechakucha Night at the GSD, Oct 12th.
Instead of just beeing an internal GSD-only event, it will aimed at the entire Boston Design community, so I want to invite to join in and give a brief lecture the likes of which you may have never given before at the GSD. It's about much more than architecture, too - practitioners in Graphic Design, Product Design, Urban Design and everything in between are encouraged to participate.

If you didn't already know about it, PechaKucha is an informal, open format of presentation that seems  like an ideal way to showcase not only the extraordinary achievements of the GSD community, but also the amazingly talented people in the Boston area. Instead of just a workshare presentation, we would love to hear from a lesser known side of your designer selves.
What that is, we leave to you.  You may be familiar with the diabolical format Mark Dytham and Astrid Klein came up with for PechaKucha: 20 images (jpegs
1024x768) x 20 seconds each.  The slides appear automatically, so there's no stopping or going back.
Add to that, you and a microphone. It's quick, diverse, inspiring and most of all, fun.  This PechaKucha Night will be a big party.

We would like to have 15 presenters comprised of Students, Faculty and Professionals from the Boston area to show what they love or what they love to do in that unique PechaKucha way.

If you will be in town and are interested in revealing a bit of your designer's alter-ego, please contact Brett Stilwell at brettstilwell - at - gmail.com or Ivan Shumkov,
Alumni representative for Student Forum.   His email is: ishumkov - at - gsd.harvard.edu."
