Introduction to the black side.............

For a while I have been concerned that the black side of life and design here in the city of boston gets overlooked. In a city that is 51% minority with a Black Governor, why do we have to work so hard to know about all the exciting things that are happening in the city? Therefore the goal of this blog is to pass along information about events, activities, job opportunities and restaurant reviews from a minority perspective. The Black side or hidden side of life and design here in Boston is the scope of what you will find in the posts. And some occasional commentary will also make its way to the web. Enjoy!

Position:                Youthworker
Location:                       Orchard Gardens/Commons Housing Development
Organization:                 Project HIP-HOP
 
Qualifications
-           At least two years experience working with teens especially youth who are difficult to attract into programming
-           Must work from the perspective that young people are a community asset who need positive adult support and reinforcement to realize their potential
-           Ability to meet young people where they are, build a relationship, and then push them to grow
-           Able to set standards and maintain them consistently
-           Basic administrative and computer skills to maintain youth files and general paperwork
-           Ability to supervise young people working on a job
-           Experience in developing and facilitating workshops
-           Background/ Familiarity with hip hop culture is preferred
-           Preferably multilingual in English and Spanish
 
Resposibilities
Outreach to young people
-           Build relationships with young people aged 13-18 in Orchard Gardens / Commons
-           Spend at least 4 hours a week out in the neighborhood interacting with young people
-           Keep a log of outreach activities and identify what youth needs to achieve job readiness
-           Connect with the BCYF Streetworker, Resident Services staff and other youthworkers weekly to share information on teens and promote job, leadership and arts opportunities
-           Coordinate extra-curricular activities that expose youth to arts & culture (theater, spoken word poetry, hip hop music), community building and youth leadership opportunities
 
Youth Leadership & Job Readiness Training
-           Recruit youth to participate in PHH leadership development activities as a way to help them build skills and discipline that will prepare them for employment
-           Work closely with program coordinator to assist in the supervision of teens in PHH jobs
-           Work with youth leadership crews that are based at Orchard helping them to use their community service work as an opportunity to build job skills
 
Employment Assessment & Support
-           Have preliminary meetings with young people who are interested in employment to see what skills they need to be ready for work
-           Connect youth with MissionWorks employment specialists in order to help them get jobs
-           Help all Orchard teens to file registration paperwork with youth employment agencies (BYF, ABCD, PIC, etc.)
-           Meet with neighborhood stakeholders to coordinate summer hiring making sure that teens are aware of and connected to the jobs that are available to them
-           Provide support to 18 year olds who are transitioning from teen to adult-oriented jobs
 
 
Salary Range - $30 – 33K depending on experience)
