Introduction to the black side.............

For a while I have been concerned that the black side of life and design here in the city of boston gets overlooked. In a city that is 51% minority with a Black Governor, why do we have to work so hard to know about all the exciting things that are happening in the city? Therefore the goal of this blog is to pass along information about events, activities, job opportunities and restaurant reviews from a minority perspective. The Black side or hidden side of life and design here in Boston is the scope of what you will find in the posts. And some occasional commentary will also make its way to the web. Enjoy!

NRDC Smart Growth & Climate Change Fellowship

JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

Smart Growth & Climate Change Fellowship

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), a national nonprofit environmental organization, has an opening beginning in fall 2007 for a two-year, full-time fellowship in our Washington, D.C. office. The fellow will provide scientific and technical support to NRDC's smart growth program, working with NRDC staff, outside partners, and the academic community to research, assemble, and synthesize data and information that articulate the potential of smart land use practices to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. He/she will also engage the larger scientific community and collaborate with other science fellows in NRDC's Science Center.

In particular, NRDC's smart growth program has been the environmental community's leader in documenting the multiple problems associated with poorly planned, sprawling land development and articulating their solutions. Our goal is to transform the marketplace and public policy so that incentives favor smart growth, not sprawl, and so that compact, walkable, transit-accessible land development becomes easier to build and more commonplace.

Central to this mission is the role that smart growth can play in addressing the array of serious problems presented by global warming. While there has been a wealth of research and information on the connections between growth patterns and greenhouse gas emissions, and the field continues to evolve, much of the data are fragmentary and not sufficiently reconciled, synthesized, and articulated to be useful to a policymaking audience. A primary goal of the fellowship will be to work with the leading thinkers in the field to collect, assemble, and refine this piecemeal body of work so that it forms a persuasive whole and more clearly addresses the key policy issues of the day. NRDC believes that reversing global warming requires a strong, multi-faceted approach, and that better land use must be an important part of the package of solutions.

Applicants must have a graduate degree with strong credentials in urban planning, architecture, energy science or a related field, and a strong interest in land use and applying scientific and technical knowledge to environmental problems and policy. The successful applicant will also be a self-starter, have excellent writing skills, and enjoy working on an interdisciplinary team with people from different professional backgrounds. He/she should thrive under a fast-paced environment, with well-honed abilities to manage and prioritize a heavy workload.

The salary for this position is commensurate with experience. We offer competitive salaries and excellent benefits. NRDC is an equal opportunity employer, and we particularly encourage women and people of color to apply. Interested applicants should email a cover letter, resume, and writing sample no later than August 31, 2007 to HR_DC@NRDC.org. In your correspondence, please indicate where you saw this job announcement. No phone calls or faxes, please.
