Introduction to the black side.............

For a while I have been concerned that the black side of life and design here in the city of boston gets overlooked. In a city that is 51% minority with a Black Governor, why do we have to work so hard to know about all the exciting things that are happening in the city? Therefore the goal of this blog is to pass along information about events, activities, job opportunities and restaurant reviews from a minority perspective. The Black side or hidden side of life and design here in Boston is the scope of what you will find in the posts. And some occasional commentary will also make its way to the web. Enjoy!

Friday, August 24- Sunday, August 26, 2007
This event is co-sponsored by the diversity committee of the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) and will feature guided hikes (for all levels), introduction to map and compass reading, mountain biking and more. Food and lodging will be provided at the AMC's Highland Center at Crawford Notch. http://www.outdoors.org/lodging/lodges/highland/index.cfm
The event also includes an evening social on Saturday, August 25 from 8:00 PM-9:45 PM for children/families, and from 10:00 PM-12:30 AM for adults.
The Highland Center, which opened in September 2003 to rave reviews, sits on 26 acres in the mountain pass carved in the foothills of the Presidential Mountains, about three hours north of Boston. Before the turn of the 20th century, it was the site of the Crawford House, a grand old summer resort like the historic Mount Washington Hotel five miles down the road.
Lodge packages include a four-course dinner, breakfast, and free use of outdoor gear (including hiking boots, outerwear and backpacks) provided by L.L. Bean.
Because meals are included, the prices are per person, not per room. Private rooms with at least double occupancy: $85.32/adult/night and $42.00/children/night. Bunk rooms: $52.92/adult/night and $42.00/children/night. In addition, there will be a $20 event registration fee (per adult).
This will be a great opportunity for our Boston Ski Party members, friends and family to enjoy the mountains in the summer and winter. If you want to just sit by the large stone fireplace or settle into a rocking chair in the second-floor library, that's fine, too. Or, for those of you who would rather go sightseeing or shop, the shops and restaurants of North Conway are just a thirty minute drive away.
The first deposit of 50% of the total cost will be due July 29th and the final Payment will be due August 3rd. If you have any questions or need more information, please contact Hank Bell @ Henry_Bell99@yahoo.com or 617-298-2988.
passport1NEW U.S. TRAVEL DOCUMENT REQUIREMENTS

The U.S. Department of State has initiated new Travel Document Requirements under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI). Following is an excerpt of the new requirements:
"The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) will require all travelers to and from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean and Bermuda to present a passport or other accepted document that establishes the bearer's identity and nationality to enter or re-enter the United States. The goal is to strengthen border security and facilitate entry into the United States for U.S. citizens and legitimate international travelers. "In the proposed implementation plan, the initiative will be implemented in two phases. The proposed timeline will be as follows:
"January 23, 2007 - Passports, Merchant Mariner Documents (MMDs) or NEXUS Air cards would be required for all air travel, and most commercial sea travel, from within the Western Hemisphere for citizens of the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Bermuda. This is a change from the previously scheduled date of January 1, in order to accommodate holiday travel.
"January 1, 2008 - The statutory deadline for all Western Hemisphere travel, including land border travel. The specific requirements for the land border crossing will be addressed in a separate rulemaking in advance of this date."
Visit the U.S. Department of State's website for more information.
